The Black Student Union, the school’s newest club is designed to promote activities of common interest and to learn about African American history.

“I came up with the Black Student Union because I wanted to, not only unify all African Americans, but I wanted to teach as well as inform the school about African American culture as well as promoting African American values,” junior James Mattheis said.

Mattheis hopes the club, still in its infancy, will help promote African American values with certain goals in mind.

“To show others the positive influence that African Americans have and erase or eradicate the negative perception of African Americans,” Mattheis said. “And to let, not all the student body, but let the community know that African Americans are strong and we’re smart and we want to erase those stereotypes and we just want to be the change and be that positive light .”

In celebration of Black History Month, there was a district wide celebration held Wednesday at Lone Star High School.

“I feel like the issue is important because it gives us young African Americans a voice,” sophomore J’Vion Jackson said. “And a chance to express our ideas of how we can make the world a better place for all races.”
