The winter sports season is coming to a close with wrestling and basketball seasons ending over the weekend as girls’ and boys’ soccer make a run towards the playoffs.

Wrestling

For the wrestling team, it was a trip to Cypress for the UIL state championship meet with the girls’ team finishing in 2nd place, with junior Martha Moore (119 lbs.) taking 1st, senior Logan Mize (128) finishing 2nd, senior Miranda Tyler (138) taking 3rd, and senior Kyra Austin (185) finishing the weekend in 6th in their respective weight classes.

“I was pretty shocked but at the same time it felt really cool so I just sort of jumped up in excitement,” Moore said. “I put in a lot of extra work outside of just wrestling at school, I worked out about six hours a day leading up to it and I knew what I wanted to accomplish and I did it.”

The boys’ team finished 4th overall with junior Broderick Green (113) finishing 5th, junior Jonathan Green (132) taking 2nd, senior Jordan Robison (152) taking 2nd and senior Blaine Rowe (220) also in 2nd.

Basketball

While the wrestlers were competing at state, both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams were trying to earn their way to state.

However, it wasn’t to be, with the boys falling to Highland Park on Friday 60-57.

“It was a tough one to swallow because it was such a close game so it comes down to a couple of possessions here and there that we didn’t execute,” head coach Danny Melton said. “When you play a game that close just one or two calls that could have gone different ways and could’ve helped you but overall I’m proud of the team.”

The girls’ team also played on Friday beating Mansfield Legacy 50-44 in the regional semifinals, but less than 24 hours later the team fell to Mansfield Timberview 53-47 in the regional final.

“For this team to accomplish what they have accomplished is something pretty special, especially knowing that we were on the verge of winning that game,” head coach Ross Reedy said. “I’m just super proud and super lucky to have coached them.”

Soccer

For soccer, it was District 13-5A matches against Lone Star on Friday with the girls’ team getting  a 2-1 win over the Rangers, while the boys lost 3-2.

“We dominated a lot of the game, last time we played them we didn’t do too good, but this time we got a lot more shots off so we did pretty well,” junior Cat Lychwek said. “We knew that they were really aggressive so we focused on defending on the sides but being able to attack as well.”
