The girls’ golf team is one of the best in the district.

The girls’ and boys’ golf teams are moving closer to the District 13-5A tournament with the boys competing Monday and Tuesday at The Bridges Golf Club in Gunter and the girls doing so a week later on April 10-11.

“If the boys find consistency, they can compete for a district title,” assistant coach Adam Davidson said. “We are in one of the best districts in 5-A, four of the schools could compete at the state level; unfortunately only two teams advance to regionals. Those two teams usually get to state.”

In their last year, the seniors are doing what they can to make it last.

“We want to make sure that we are getting better in order to make it through districts our last year,” senior Christopher Coyne said. “We just take it day by day, shot by shot. ”

The girls have another week before they compete on April 10-11, giving them extra practice time.

“To prepare for districts we’ve been working really hard on strategy that goes into playing the district course,” senior Loren Matrone said. “Working on our fairway shots and working on chips that are uphill because it’s really a wide open course. We’ve really been tailoring our practices to the course that we’re going to be playing.”

It’s not always as fun to win as an individual than it is as a team,

The girls’ team, after getting fifth in state in 2016 are hoping to qualify for their 4th straight state tournament.

“It’s been a tough year with injuries but I think we are healthy now,” Davidson said. “Our goal every year is to win district, win region, and compete for a state championship. Only 12 teams in the state earn the opportunity to do that.”

Golf is usually an individual sport, but the road to state is a team journey.

“We all go out there and play our own game for four hours but at the end of the day we all put our scores together and you depend on each other to go out and do their individual best,” Matrone said. “It’s enough of an individual sport to where I can be accountable and make sure that I’m doing what I’m supposed to do but also be able to contribute to team score because it’s not always as fun to win as an individual than it is as a team.”
