Golf drives to district

The district golf tournament is April 3 and 4 for the boys and April 10 through 11 for the girls.

With the goal of advancing all players to the regional tournament, the team has been preparing since August with practices Monday through Thursday every week with several tournaments sprinkled in.

While most sports have games that affect their ranking at districts, things are different for the varsity golf team.

“We only have one event which is the district tournament,” head golf coach Shannon Glidwell. “It’s in April. All the tournaments that are held before that are kind of like pre-season games. They don’t really count towards anything, the only thing that matters is what your team does in district so you can win every tournament leading up to district but if you come in 4 at district you won’t advance to regionals.”

The girls advanced to the state tournament in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

The boys have placed third at districts the past two years but only the top two team advance to regionals.

At the district tournament, golfers are required to walk and play 36 holes in two days, while pushing or carrying their clubs and trying to prevent anything from distracting them.

“It’s really important to me that I make sure I stay level headed when I play because there’s so many different things that can go wrong in a round of golf and they happen to everybody so it’s really important that I just make sure I focus on the shot that’s ahead of me,” senior Loren Matrone said. “And to make sure that the weather I don’t let it affect me.”
