For the next year, junior Aishani Sil’s artwork will be exhibited on the cover of the Don’t mess with Texas 2017-2018 calendar.

Art teacher Pernie Fallon explains the accomplishment of her student.

“Well, it was a call for artists to enter the Don’t mess with Texas calendar contest,” Fallon said. “And out of 4,300 entries [Aishani] won the cover- which is the coveted place to be when you’re on a calendar. So, her work will be featured on the cover and then she won the 11th grade top prize. She own first place in eleventh grade and the grand prize for the cover.”

Being that the competition was from over 136 Texas communities, Sil had to compete against hundreds in her age group.

“Well it’s a pretty big deal because there were hundreds of kids in her age group,” Fallon said. “And she essentially beat everyone out for that.”

For Sil, winning was more about the theme than the title.

“I enter competitions regularly and most of the ones I enter they have like a message-like this one was about preserving nature-like a theme,” Aishani said. “I guess it makes me feel good about myself that I’m using my art to spread positive messages.”
