Eight athletes made their way to the University of Texas at Austin May 11-13 to compete in the UIL State Track Meet.

Of the eight, three placed in their individual events, including sophomore Nissi Kabongo who placed second in the 800 meter run.

“It was a really big accomplishment because I worked really hard all season long and being able to medal at state was just the cherry on top of the cake,” Kabongo said.

Along with Kabongo, junior Carrie fish finished the 3200 meter run in third place, setting a new personal record for herself.

“My goal was to definitely to place in my races and my time was good too,” Fish said. “That’s the exact time that I wanted to get all season, so it was great to be able to peak at the right moment.”

The boys 4×400 barely missed a spot on the podium, ending up in fourth place, but one of the legs, senior Isaiah Palmer found his way in the 400 meter run, finishing as a silver medalist.

“It gives you a launch pad,” Palmer said. “It gave me a lot of motivation and excitement and it galvanized me to look forward to college because from here it’s just making progress and getting better.”
