If the wizarding world of Harry Potter can do it, why can’t we? This is probably what the creators of Phhhoto were thinking when they decided to create a social app based on the idea of moving pictures.

This photo/video app has been getting more attention in recent years, particularly by the younger generation. It launched in late July 2014 and has even captured the likings of Skrillex, Katy Perry, and Joe Jonas.

Users start by taking a video of something and the app takes four pictures to compile it into a gif. The result is a fast paced moving picture of the captured moment. The app is pretty straight-forward and easy to use. The modern layout, black and neon color scheme, and slightly imperfect style of photography is appealing to visual enthusiasts.

Posting without a wireless connection is nearly impossible, but if you attempt to post it and try again in a connected location, then there should be success.

Another downside to the app is that it is prone to crash almost every three minutes of usage. And unfortunately the gifs only save as pictures in a phone’s camera roll. If a user simply wanted to post the gif on another social media site though, they would just click the share button. Besides that, there are much more interesting features to the app than there are flaws. You can follow and invite friends, like and comment on posts just like any other social media app, and using the hashtag “#wow” might ensure your gif a spotlight on the wow hashtag alongside other rad gifs.

Another great feature are the weekly/daily filters. Whether it be that particular day or week, Phhhoto treats users to eye candy filters which take the gif game to another level. Literally, candy filters. For the week leading up to Halloween, there were different filters starring a candy brand each day.

This addictive and entertaining app fulfills the consumer’s need to be current and slightly alternative to the mainstream. Android users are most recently welcome to the gif game, as the app announced that they can now install the app on their phones as well.
