Mexican Sugar missteps

Review: Some dishes succeed but some fall short at this Tex-Mex restaurant

Despite some missteps, Mexican Sugar at the Shops of Legacy is worth a second visit especially for those wanting to feel like they are eating healthy mexican food.

Mexican Sugar, at the Shops of Legacy, is one of the newest restaurants in the area. From the outside, it looks like your average Tex-Mex diner; it’s colorful with neon lettering that snatches attention with a giant fountain right in front of the doors.

Upon entering, diners are awestruck. The inside is very elegant and has a very homey but modern feel to it. All the waiters are wearing their nicest vests and the waitresses are sporting red lipstick and roses pinned throughout their hair.

On this visit, the table had one of the newer waiters in training, yet he was one of the best we’ve ever had. While his checking up on us every few minutes did get irritating, he made sure we had everything we needed, and even managed to get tons of laughs out from us.

Chips and queso started the meal but honestly, it was disappointing. For such an expensive restaurant ($8 queso and chips) and everything else going so smoothly, we expected the queso to be phenomenal, but it fell short. It was overly milky and had little to no taste to it. The chips were borderline stale, and that’s saying a lot because teenagers usually eat anything.

For dinner, it was the mesquite grilled salmon, and while it was good, better salmon has been had (it’s mom’s favorite food). But overall, the dish was great. It came on a bed of vegetables and what is called a “latin corn succotash.” Everything tasted so fresh and delicious. The fajitas weren’t very impressive and diners would most likely expect more.

While eating dinner, it’s a very nice atmosphere to talk and have family time. It’s not too loud, and it feels very homey. The bar is big and wide with giant TV’s lining the walls. It seemed that many people go there after work to have happy hour and everyone seemed to enjoy their time.

With these missteps, Mexican Sugar might only be worth a second visit for those wanting to feel like they are eating healthy Mexican food.
