Wingspan: What position do you play and why?

Thompson: “I am a middle blocker because I love hitting and I’m tall which makes me good in the front row.”

Wingspan: What are your goals for this season?

Thompson: “I hope we can make it to playoffs and stay focused on each game at a time.”

Wingspan: What qualities would you like to be known for?

Thompson: “I’d like to be known for specifically knowing my teammates on and off the court and being kind to them.”

Wingspan: What does practice look like for you, and what’s the hardest part about it?

Thompson: “We start off usually with a warm up game and then we progressively go through and work on certain skills, such as hitting and blocking and then we play scrimmages at the end. Because it’s in the morning sometimes you could get really tired by the end of the day, and that’s probably the hardest part.”

Wingspan: What is your favorite/worst experience while playing volleyball?

Thompson: “My favorite would probably be being with the team on the bus rides home after a win, and the worst would be some of the conditioning things we have to do. Especially an OFI, I hate that. It’s basically the width of the football field where you sprint there and back and then lunge, bearclaw, then sprint again. Which is a lot harder than how it sounds.”

Wingspan: What advice would you give someone wanting to play volleyball?

Thompson: “Sometimes it can be hard at first but definitely stick with it, it’s a fun way to meet new friends especially in high school. Since it’s in the fall, you make your friends in the summer so you’re not alone on the first day of school.”

Wingspan: Have you ever been injured because of the sport? If so how did you overcome it?

Thompson: “Yes I broke my pinky blocking, it got broken in two places. I didn’t really tell my coach, i told her i dislocated it but i didn’t want to miss the season. It was just my pinky, and it was also on my left hand, not my hitting hand, so I kind of just sucked it up.”

Wingspan: What made you choose volleyball over any other sport?

Thompson: “I like how it’s not a lot of super physical contact, you’re still with a team but basketball, for example, you’re pushing people. With volleyball, it’s like you’re blocking people but it’s not as much contact and your on your own side the whole time.”

Wingspan: How do you plan to pursue volleyball in the future?

Thompson: “I decided I’m not going to play in college but I think I’ll try to do intramurals and probably with my friends for fun every once in awhile.”
