With one meet in the books, the cross country team is gearing up for its second event of the season Saturday in Denton. For sophomore Carrie Fish, it’s a chance for her second straight win as she took first in the FISD Invitational. As the team gets ready for Saturday’s meet, Wingspan caught up with the fleet footed sophomore.

Wingspan: Going into this season were you surprised with how well you did at the meet or what was your mindset going in to the meet?

Fish: “I had a mindset of winning, but I was very surprised that I actually won.I was planning on just doing what I did last year.”

Wingspan: Team wise how do you feel like ready or prepared are you for the season?

Fish: “I feel like we are totally ready because we have been practicing a lot; we have all been working hard. We’ve been trying like pack running. I feel like we are totally prepared to go to state again.”

Wingspan: What are practices like for the cross country team? What activities and drills do you do?

Fish: “We try and range our weekly mileage between 25 to 30 miles a week. We start at 6:30a.m. every day. Also July twice a week.”

Wingspan: How does practicing before school in the summer help you as a team?

Fish: “It definitely helps because after we normally go out to eat breakfast. We had a big team

sleepover, it helped us bond as a team and get close with each other because we had some new girls, so we needed to all get close.”

Wingspan: Do you see any difference between your experience this year in cross country and last year?

Fish: “I felt more prepared because I trained all summer for this, so I’ve definitely prepared to go out and kick some butt.”

Wingspan: Are there any upper class men on the team that you feel like are leaders or are helping you out?
Fish: “I feel like Yuliana Lorenso and Rithika Proddutoor are definitely great leaders, they’ve lead the team through all of the practices they are always very motivational and they have great speeches before the meets.”
