While most students thought nothing of school over the break, some athletes were busy competing in meets and tournaments as winter sports began in earnest with both the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams taking part in one of the biggest Thanksgiving basketball showcases.

The girls’ team fell to two-time 4A defending state champion Argyle 46-32 in the Duncanville Thanksgiving Hoopfest on Saturday.

“We played really well, we kept pushing because we were really tired,” sophomore Kelsey Kurak said. “We’ve been practicing a lot harder so in the games we can keep up with that pace.”

The boys team also competed in the Thanksgiving Hoopfest, beating Montgomery Carver 53-47.

Despite the win Saturday, the team fell to Naaman Forrest in triple overtime 97-94 earlier in the week.

“That game really required us to dig deep and to continue to work hard and fight through the tiredness,” senior Nate Autrey said. “Because of that game we get to look back on it and study our mistakes so we can be better.”
