Winning by a 63 stroke margin, the girls’ golf team will be taking yet another trip to the state tournament in May.

“My goal was for the team to win and advance to state, and we did,” senior Loren Matrone said. “Golf is an individual sport until all of the scores come in, then all that matters is the team. I play for the team when I’m out on the course, not just my own individual goals.”

The windy conditions made for a tough few days, but senior Darby Deans was still able to come out on top with a score of 160.

“The windy conditions made the course physically and mentally tough,” Deans said. “We were playing the best teams in the region so there were a lot of tough competitors, I just wanted for the team to win and to play the best I can so I can be in a position to win individually as well.”

The girls’ practice makes perfect mentality showed up on Monday and Tuesday.

“Our toughest competition is Wakeland, but we play with them a lot, so we know what to expect,” Matrone said. “I have been working on my ball striking a lot. Hitting greens is an important part of scoring well so I have been preparing my full swing.”

The team is making its 4th straight appearance at the state tournament, and this year, they hope to finally take home a first place spot.

“We went to Regionals with the intention of winning and defending our 2016 Regional Championship,” head coach Shannon Glidwell said. “Our appearance at Regionals shows just how hard each of the players has worked this year, hey are driven to be the best and to compete for a State Championship in 2017.”
