Senior Caitlyn Hazzard has gone from playing tenor trombone, to drum major, to being presented with a $12,500 scholarship at the TMEA Convention.

Band received the highest possible score in the regional University Interscholastic League at Little Elm Stadium.

Along with the rest of the schools in the district, band will now compete in the area UIL marching contest on October 28.

“There’s three judges that give a rating between one and five, with one as the highest you can get, and all three judges gave us a one,” band director Jamie Weaver said. “This is our opportunity to go to the State marching contest. It’s a good year, especially for 5A [schools] because it’s a State year, so everybody is on top of their game.”

There will be 24 bands from different regions competing in the upcoming area competition. Of those 24, only four will be chosen to advance to the state level.

“As we progress throughout the season, this is a foundation on which we can build something truly great,” drum major Shane Bugni said. “Although all the FISD schools did get sweepstakes, we hope to be competitive coming into this Saturday. We’re practicing a whole lot more and being more focused on the process by which we achieve the goal, rather than the goal itself.”

While the band has experienced success thus far, they haven’t faltered in their dedication to practicing.

“It really showed us from videos we watched and things we’ve been told that we have things to work on and things we can improve on in preparation for area,” section leader Nathan Brooks said. “If we really buckle down and make sure that everyone is doing everything the exact same way and making sure we look not like individuals, but a whole group, I think we’ll do really well.”
