NHS members stayed after school this week to volunteer by doing holiday door decorations for teachers. A list of teacher’s names were presented along with the theme that they desired.

“I wanted to participate in holiday door decorating because not only is it a great way to earn FISD hours for NHS,” junior Shenal Christian said. “It also allows students to help out teachers and the school become festive for the holidays.”

This NHS tradition of holiday door decor started two years ago.

“It’s to spread Christmas cheer and just holiday spirits,” senior Shree Balaji said. “Bring everyone’s spirits up right before the break.”

Biology teacher Deana Cowger’s door sported gingerbreads, snowmen, and snowflakes for the holiday season.

The NHS sponsors supplied the volunteers with supplies to create the door decorations.

“The process included looking at which teachers wished for their doors to  be decorated along with which theme they preferred,” Christian said. “Once that had been decided, we used decorative elements such as decals, wrapping paper, paint, as well as glitter and foam cut outs. Then, we would pick a teacher and locate their room and decorated the door with the theme in mind. First, the wrapping paper would go on. Then the window border could be decorated with decals as well as sticking on gingerbread or ornaments.”

Although the door decorating can be complicated, Christian believes it was worth the effort.

“The thing I liked most about decorating the doors was the appreciation received from the teachers,” Christian said. “Many teachers had not had their doors decorated yet during their teaching career at Liberty and doing a small favor of decorating their doors really helps them and everyone else get into the Christmas spirit.”

Although the holiday door decorating is a seasonal activity, it makes a year of impressions.

“I really think it brings our NHS members together,” Balaji said. “It gives them a chance to interact with one another in a friendly setting and it spreads the spirit and gets everyone ready for the holidays.”
