Frisco ISD is switching to a standards-based grading system. While the main purpose of this grading system is for student’s grades to represent what level of mastery they are at, for geometry teacher Kristen Tatum, this is a chance to provide learning opportunities for students.

Frisco ISD is one of the 447 school districts within the U.S. and Canada to be named to the 8th Annual AP District Honor Roll. Districts featured on this list had to have increased the percentage of students who receive AP exam scores of at least a 3 and the number of students who enrolled in AP courses.

“Congratulations to all the educators and administrators in this district who have worked to clear a path for more students of all backgrounds to participate and succeed in AP,” head of AP and Instruction Trevor Packer said. “These educators and administrators are fostering a culture in their schools and classrooms that allows students to face new challenges and build the confidence to succeed.”

AP teachers within our district prioritize providing students with an upper level learning environment and enhancing students’ performance in these higher level courses.

“This honor is a testament to the valuable work that is happening in Frisco ISD to provide access to AP courses for all students and to provide the resources and support for student success,” senior director with The College Board Amanda Dawson said in an article on the Frisco ISD website.

For AP English Language and AP Seminar teacher Chad Doty, students’ passion and academic drive yield good results.

“I think it’s a combination of our students and our teachers,” Doty said. “Speaking from my experience as an AP English Language teacher, a lot of my students come into the course super motivated because they want to do well in the course, but also on the final AP test, so that influences the way we develop the curriculum.”
