Featured Athlete: Broderick Green
Grade: 11 | Sport: Wrestling
Wingspan: How long have you been wrestling and what got you started?
Green: “I’ve been wrestling for 10 years. My dad wrestled in college so he kind of brought me up into the sport. In middle school I did club wrestling and that made me do high school. I just do club practice outside of school and I just learn a lot there.”
Wingspan: How did you know wrestling was the sport for you?
Green: “I just like being tested. It tests your physical and mental strength everyday. So it’s just fun.”
Wingspan: What fuels your passion to wrestle?
Green: “Like I said it’s fun to test yourself and see how far you’ve come everyday.”
Wingspan: What goes through your head before a match?
Green: “I really just think about trying to mentally defeat my opponent basically. Because once he is mentally defeated than he is physically defeated basically.”
Wingspan: What gets you pumped up and makes you energetic?
Green: “Just my teammates winning gets me pumped and then music.”
Wingspan: Who inspires you the most to succeed?
Green: “Probably my dad because he did the same thing. He wrestled in college and won state in high school, so he got me into that.”
Wingspan: What has been one of your greatest achievements?
Green: “Last year I got fifth at state so that was fun and a good accomplishment. Also we won state duals a couple years back.”
Wingspan: What do you want to accomplish this season?
Green: “I want to win state and I’m ranked second this year, so I have a good chance.”
Wingspan: What disappoints you the most about your sport?
Green: “Losing is really the worst, and anything that sets you back like an injury or getting sick is all bad.”
Wingspan: What is your biggest struggle?
Green: “I want to get faster if that makes sense. You want to be as fast as possible so people are thrown off. Basically I just want to get faster and build on that aspect.”
Wingspan: What do you enjoy the most about wrestling?
Green: “I guess just building yourself to be the best that you can possibly be. It’s fun getting stronger, getting faster and being mentally and physically there.”
