Students have the chance to showcase their political skills and learn from one another at the YMCA Youth and Government Conference in Austin.

At the conference students are expected to debate bills in the legislative section and get the opportunity to meet people for all around the state.

“They get the chance to simulate the work of real politicians in mock legislative sessions,” social studies teacher Sarah Wiseman said. “All students wrote bills that could be passed on a state level; Education in the state of Texas is a popular topic.”

Members have been practicing their debates with one another to prepare for the event and open themselves up to an array of viewpoints.

“My delegation and I have been debating our bills to practice Parliamentary Procedure, which is the set of rules by which we have to debate,” senior Eman Yousef said.  “As a student, I’ve been taught to keep an open mind to my peers due to the YG program’s diverse nature.”
