To be dominant is something every athlete strives for, but in sports it can mean different things. For senior Katelyn Burtch, that means reaching the 100 win mark in her time on campus.

100 wins over a four year span, more than 25 per year, as well as competing in a state championship, showcases how skilled the girls’ basketball program has been over the past four years.

For head coach Ross Reedy, Burtch is unlike any other player that has played for him.

“You know Katelyn is the best leader we have ever had here at Liberty,” Reedy said. “Starting out she would shed a piece off every year but this year she sheds a every day and becomes better everyday and makes this team better everyday.”

But like many leaders, Burtch says it’s not about her, it’s all about the team.

“What I believe that has contributed most to our success as a program is the sense of community we have,” Burtch said. “And how much of a team we are and how its focused on team success rather than individual success.”

Reaching the mark over winter break, burtch says the experience is a unique achievement.

“It means I have done something while I was here, that only 4 girls have achieved while I have been here,” Burtch said. “It is just an impressive achievement that I have accomplished.”

For her teammates Burtch has been a great leader to follow in practices and games.

“She’s made me a better person a better player,” junior Makenzi Glover said. “Katelyn is the most selfless player I know. The way she leads and the way she plays have allowed and she’s always there when we need someone to talk to.”

Now totalling more than 110 wins, with only the playoffs left, Burtch will miss her teammates the most when her final season comes to an end and she heads to Harding University next year.

“The thing that I will miss most about my time here at Liberty would have to be the girls,” Burtch said. “I have grown so much much here and it’s because of them, which I am very grateful for.”
