CTE program gives students the chance to teach

Learning more about what it takes to be a teacher will be the focus for students in the CTE Center‘s Survey of Education class as they shadow a teacher of their choosing on Friday.

“I think that it’ll be really fun,” freshmen Julia Votano said. “I will get a better idea of what it’s like to be a teacher.”

The students have the opportunity to job shadow a teacher from any FISD school for the entire time they are needed.

“I am very excited to be shadowed,” 8th grade history teacher Patience Leblanc said. “I think it’s such a great idea to have students be able to see a real classroom.”

Student were given a week to choose the teacher they hopped to shadow and email them with the details.

“I chose [my teacher] because she was one of my favorite English teachers,” freshmen Mackenzie Hall said. “She always made teaching interesting.”

While there are many benefits to this project, such as being able to get hands on experience with certain age groups, survey of education teacher Stacy Scott still has a few concerns.

“I am just worried that some teachers might have the students just watching as an observer,” Scott said. “Instead of being involved in the learning environment. Students could get bored and check out if they are not engaged.”

This is the first year that this project has been assigned and Scott is hopeful that her students will learn as well as have fun.

“I absolutely believe that my students will enjoy this project,” Scott said. “They get to miss a day of high school to be a teacher for a day and they will learn so much about the teaching field and young students.”
