Track athletes were filtered out in their final step towards state, with two just left standing after the regional meet on Friday and Saturday at UT Arlington.
Senior Carrie Fish and junior Nissi Kabongo will travel to Austin for the state meet on May 11-12 with Fish competing in the 1600m and the 3200m.
“I was very unsure of how I was going to do,” Fish said. “I really wanted to get top two. I had the two mile Friday morning and honestly, after that race, I was dead for the rest of the day. So, I was worried for the mile even though it was the next day. I was just trying to recover for the mile but it was very intense.”
In the last two years, Kabongo advanced to state for high jump and the 800. However, this will be her first time to go with only one event, allowing her to hone in on high jump.
“I did end up winning high jump which I was really excited about,” Kabongo said. “On the second day, I got DQ’d in the 800. I did place second but whenever we were coming on the second lap, me and this other girl got a little bit tangled up and they said I initiated it first. So, I ended up getting disqualified for State. I’m only going for one event and in the past two years, I’ve gone to two. I think that being able to focus on just one event is going to help me work to my benefit because I’ll be able to focus and zero in on one. I’m hoping to medal this year in high jump.”
