With a trip to the state tournament on the line, the tennis team will be playing in the regional tournament  Friday at SMU against Rockwall-Heath, attempting to secure a state spot for the first time in school history.

The team is playing indoors due to the inclimate weather for the 2nd time in the playoffs, as last week’s contest versus Frisco was finished at Lifetime Fitness due to the weather.

“A lot of it has to do with the difference in lighting,” unior Adarsh Melukote said. “It’s sometimes disorienting to play indoors in artificial light. Still, there’s no wind, so that’s definitely going to help us.”

Even with their 10-9 defeat to Frisco, the team is confident going into regionals, regardless of the location where they play.

“We’re excited,” junior Amy Zhang said. “We had had a lot of close matches and it’s great to see our hard work finally pay off.”

Senior Yash Kadakia believes the team is optimistic about their chances to go to state, even if they are inexperienced at this stage of the playoffs.

“This is the farthest Liberty tennis has gone,” Kadakia said. “And we think we have a real chance of doing something special.”
