Racing through Warren Park on Saturday, cross country kicked off the 2018 season in the Frisco ISD Cross Country Invitational with the boys’ team placing 5th and the girls’ team taking 8th.

Junior Jahson Ferguson lead the way for the boys, finishing in 11th place while junior Amelia Jauregui finished in 2nd.

“I could not be more thrilled with our results,” cross country coach Ben Manning said. “Warren is a very tough course so you don’t necessarily have to pay attention to the times for a normal 5K because there’s lots of hills. But for our first meet, setting the bar for the season, I couldn’t be happier.”

With both teams finishing in the top ten, the expectations are high for this coming season.

“For the boys we did very well because we placed fifth overall and three of those schools are outside of Frisco,” junior Pierce Rupert said. “The gap between us and the next Frisco school behind us is pretty big and definitely looks good considering we have a whole other month and a half until districts.”

As the reigning state champions, the girl’s team has big goals for one another and for upcoming  meets.

“I think the meet at Warren was a solid starting point but it was definitely a hard one,” Jauregui said. “We were missing two of our top five runners and so our average wasn’t as good as it is normally. But we are starting to do harder workouts to better prepare for the rest of the season.”
