Stepping up in classification, the boys’ basketball team took on a quartet of 6A schools in the Lone Star Classic on Monday and Tuesday.

“We came in with the mindset of playing really good teams, ” head boys’ basketball coach Stephen Friar said. “We’re trying to get better for February and March, we are not necessary worried about peaking right now, but with the competition we played against, I felt like we got a lot better.”

Beginning the tournament with a 54-43 win over Prosper, followed by a 65-58 victory over Richardson Berkner on Monday, the boys’ winning streak broke as they fell to Jesuit in a close 49-43 and ended the tournament with a 56-52 loss to Mesquite on Tuesday.

“We started off the tournament playing well,” senior Zion Richardson said. “Not our best, but for the first day we were able to get two wins against two very good teams in Prosper and Richardson Berkner, but fatigue set in for most of us throughout the rest of the tournament and that’s where we have to be mentally tough to finish games whole being tired.”

With district play beginning Dec. 4, Richardson believes the team still has room to tap into their full potential.

“We must learn how to play with more heart, play for each other, and to also just know what talent we have, because we are very talented with a lot of potential that we need to tap out,” Richardson said. “If we can get those together and control the game, we will be more than ready to head into districts.”
