The Thanksgiving break wasn’t a complete rest for the girls’ basketball team as they prepared for the start of District 9-5A play on Tuesday by practicing and taking on 6A power DeSoto.

On the girls’ side of the court, the Redhawks faced off against DeSoto on Tuesday, losing to the Eagles 52-31 at The Nest.

“We played really, really well, we just ran out of gas and they are super athletic and a good basketball team,” head girls’ basketball coach Ross Reedy said. “When we had to problem solve once we got tired and once we got down a little bit, and we just didn’t do very well in those situations, DeSoto knows it wasn’t a 20 point game, we know it wasn’t a 20 point game in terms of how it was played. They just got after us in the second half and we didn’t do a very good job of problem solving when we got tired.”

With a minute and a half left in the first half, the score was nearly tied 18-17, but the Redhawks fell behind as the Eagles were able to sink enough buckets to take the lead 22-17.

“We lost to one of the best teams in 6A, and they were tough,” senior Mara Casey said. “I don’t feel like we played our best game, though, and we were missing a couple of girls on vacation and injury. Had we had our whole team playing, I think the game would’ve turned out differently.”

Despite the score, Reedy believes that the game provided experience needed for the team as they enter district play on Tuesday against Lebanon Trail.

“The big takeaways of the game were realizing in the first half that DeSoto is one of the best teams in the whole state of Texas, and you can compete with anyone,” Reedy said. “And in the second half, that if your margins are going to be small, meaning if you’re going to have players out, you’re going to be not as athletic as the other team and you really have to hone in and do things right so that you can play 32 minutes solid as opposed to 16 minutes.”
