Kicking off an early winter solstice celebration, the newly formed Chinese Culture Club learned how to make tang yuan at their meeting on Wednesday.

“I usually celebrate by eating a lot of tang yuan,” president Dora Sow said. “Winter solstice is a time in Chinese culture where we get to make tang yuan and also it is like a big gathering, like a seasonal gathering.”

Beyond celebrating tang yuan, the Chinese Culture Club is working towards an overall deeper appreciation and knowledge of Chinese culture amongst the student body.

“I feel like I should have the responsibility of not only understanding American culture,” vice president Ayda Sow said. “As an American born Chinese, I should also understand my roots and where my family came from. The goal is to promote Chinese culture in general because we have many students on campus that are born and raised here, I feel like we could be more exposed to other cultures, so CCC really helps push Chinese culture into our student body.”

Open to all students, the club participates in various activities all with the goal of expanding knowledge of Chinese culture.

“Anyone can join,” Anica Liu said. “We have played this Chinese game called Mahjong, we also did origami and now we made tangyuan.”
