A championship and a second place finish were the order of the day on Saturday for the wrestling program as the girls’ team took first place and the boys’ team took second place at the District 8-5A meet at Frisco.

The girls’ team dominated with all nine varsity wrestlers moving on to regionals with senior Ashley Cook, senior Savannah West, junior Karina Quiros, and junior Princess Egbuchunam each winning their weight class.

On the guys’ side, eight wrestlers advanced to the regional meet with senior Austin Widner, junior Armando Vasquez, senior Precious Essien, and senior Diego Lorenso taking district championships.

“This win is really big for me,” senior Austin Widner said. “It’s actually the first time I’ve gotten gold at a varsity tournament. I think it’s just come down to working hard in practice so that I’d be winning when it matters. I got to celebrate a little, but now I’m completely focused on regionals and state and I plan to get gold there as well.”
