Following in the footsteps of her older sisters, senior Emily Madden started dancing four years ago. As a part of drill team, she has made many memories with her team members.

Wingspan: What made you start dancing?

Madden: “I took dance classes when I was little but I really started dancing my freshman year because my older sister was on drill team and she encouraged me to try it.”

Wingspan: What’s it like being on drill team?

Madden: “It’s so much fun, It’s a sisterhood and a place to express yourself through dance.”

Wingspan: What’s been your favorite memory?

Madden: “Making so many amazing friends and having silly goofy times together and getting to be on the team with both my sisters.”

Wingspan: What’s your favorite style to dance? Why?

Madden: “I like jazz because it’s cute and sassy and you can add your own personality to it.”

Wingspan: How do you prepare for a show?

Madden: “We choreograph, practice, and clean our dances until they look polished and performance ready.”

Wingspan: What have you learned about yourself through dance?

Madden: “That it’s okay to try new things and step out of your comfort zone even if it means looking silly at first because you have your friends to support you.”

Wingspan: How has it affected your life?

Madden: “It has made me a better leader, stronger dancer, and allowed me to be a light and reach out to girls I probably never would’ve met otherwise which I am forever grateful for.”

Wingspan: Are you considering to pursue it as a career?

Madden: “I am not, but I have considered being a dance teacher as a side job.”

Wingspan: What is it like to balance drill team, school, and any other extracurriculars?

Madden: “It’s definitely very time consuming but you just have to manage your time well and communicate with your directors and work things out.”

Wingspan: What’s the biggest challenge of being a dancer?

Madden: “Sometimes you can be very sore and tired and discouraged, but you have to put on a smile and keep pushing through.”

Wingspan: What is your advice to anyone who aspires to be a dancer?

Madden: “To be confident in who you are and use dance as a way to express yourself and step out of your comfort zone.”
