We’ve all heard the term “daddy issues.”

According to Urban Dictionary, daddy issues are “what a girl has when she is rejected by her father…and results in her having trouble finding a significant other and trusting people.”

From the sound of that definition, a dreary and inescapable doom awaits those with daddy issues. That’s not the case, though.

While the word has a narrow and negative connotation, don’t let it deter you from interpreting all possible definitions.

The phenomenon that has been pegged as daddy “issues,” shouldn’t be taken with such a bleak outlook.

Issues aren’t the only things that can be gathered from the term.

With an introspective outlook, you can take a look into your darkest depths and extract bits of wisdom. These little bits can amount to a roadmap of your heart and can ensure that you don’t get lost in the aforementioned “dark depths.”

This “roadmap of the heart” originated from theories presented by Harville Hendrix and his partner Helen LaKelly.  Developed in the 1980s, their findings reflect that “feelings you experienced in your childhood relationships are bound to come up in your adult relationships.”

Essentially, what battles you once fought will eventually be fought again.

As children, we are ill equipped to combat our circumstances. As adults, though, we can suit up with schooling from the past.
