Making his return to the big screen for the first time in decades, Batman, played by Michael Keaton in Tim Burton’s Batman films, is beloved by many, and has gone on to influence the character in his future appearances

Before diving into his character, it is important to note his Batsuit in this movie. Being all black, it was one of the first times Batman had ever been depicted in an all black suit, and it would lead to several comics featuring Batman in those colors.

Characterwise, while much more serious than Adam West’s depiction of the character, Michael Keaton’s performance is still a goofy and unrealistic depiction of the character. This still works in the movie’s favor, as it helps the viewer feel more immersed in the comic book world being adapted to the big screen.

However, he still has his more serious moments, as both of the films feature a romantic side plot with Bruce Wayne and Vicki Vale in Batman, and Selina Kyle (Catwoman) in Batman Returns. These relationships help Bruce, still traumatised by the death of his family, learn the importance of letting others into his life.

Any actor playing Batman is actually playing three roles. The first is the dark knight himself, the second being billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne, and the last is the real Bruce we see when he is with people he knows and trusts. Michael Keaton does a great job portraying all of these aspects as he successfully gives us action packed and fun scenes as Batman, we see his wealth and his success with the ladies, and lastly, we see his internal and emotional struggles that he deals with throughout his films.

Michael Keaton brought legitimacy to Batman films, and paving the way for others, Michael Keaton’s performance is one of the reasons we still see Batman on the big screen today.
