Behind the Bat: part 3

After the massive success of Tim Burton’s Batman films, the public demanded more from the caped crusader. Declining the role for a 3rd film, Michael Keaton stepped down, leaving a spot open for a new actor to become the dark knight.

Val Kilmer accepted the role, and would go on to star in the next Batman film: Batman Forever. The film, however, has not been received well by audiences compared to its predecessors, but the important question is: does Val Kilmer deserve praise for his portrayal of the famous hero?

Val Kilmer’s suit is similar in design to Michael Keaton’s, although it does feature, quite infamously, nipples on the chest. When fighting in the suit, there is hardly a difference in fighting between Kilmer and Keaton, and, when in costume, you might think they’re the same person, which is very hard to pull off when you have to recast a character.

Batman and Bruce Wayne, are very calm and smart, and this really shines when you see him using his detective skills to solve the Riddler’s riddles. Unfortunately, you never see him extremely happy, sad, or angry, which hurts the tone of important scenes.

While Bruce Wayne does have his typical romantic subplot, this time with Dr. Chase Meridian, played by Nicole Kidman, their connection doesn’t feel as deep or real as the first two. This might not be entirely due to Kilmer though, since Warner Brothers wanted a more lighthearted, kid friendly version of Batman for their sequels to Burton’s films.

While I don’t think Val Kilmer is the worst of the Batmen, his almost emotionless portrayal of the character, and lack of depth from the studio caused Val Kilmer’s depiction of Batman to be one of the least memorable.
