The city of Little Elm recently passed a city ordinance banning the use of cell phones while driving, but the city of Frisco says that it is not following that example.

Little Elm is the latest city in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area to ban the usage of phones while driving within city ordinances, but it doesn’t appear Frisco will be joining its neighbor any time soon.

The City of Frisco has not taken action on any cell phone bans,” Frisco’s mayor Maher Maso said via email. “Currently, there are no plans to consider an ordinance.”

Even if Frisco implemented a similar ban, some argue that it wouldn’t be enough. School resource officer Jerry Varner believes the issue needs to be resolved by phone manufacturers.

“I wish they would apply an app or function on the phone that once the phone gets above 10 miles an hour, [the driver] can’t call or text,” Varner said. “We don’t need them while we’re driving.”

Students have mixed emotions about cities banning phones while driving.

“You shouldn’t be on your phone because you could kill people,” Sarah Shannon said. “But sometimes [I]  don’t know where [I’m]  going, and I need to use my phone for a GPS.”

Regardless of a ban in Frisco or not, Mayor Maso and other authorities still urge people to be cautious while driving and to avoid using cell phones.

“Some North Texas Cities have passed cell phone ordinances,” Maso said via email. “Drivers from any city need to be aware of those if they are driving through those communities.
