The girls basketball team soared in the Dallas Mavs Fall Classic tournament this weekend placing sixth overall. The team is suffering from many injuries, but their spirits are still high.

Coming off the school’s first state championship in basketball, the girls’ team tipped off its season on Friday as they try to return to the state tournament for the third year in a row.

Without state MVP Jazzy Owens-Barnett, out with an injury, the Redhawks hosted South Grand Prairie and lost 64-29.

“Honestly they are a really good team,” senior Zoe Junior said. “We were tailing them, for most of the game.”

The team was back on the court Saturday, this time taking on Martin High School. The team picked up its defense holding the Warriors to just 38 points, but the offense couldn’t get much going and the Redhawks lost 38-28.

Things will not get any easier for the 5A defending state champions.

“Our preseason is super hard,” head coach Ross Reedy said. “We have the toughest schedule in the state of Texas by far. We play Duncanville and Desoto who are the two best teams in the nation, back to back. And then our district will be really tough, we have four of the best teams in the region or state in our district.”
