The deadline to register clubs is fast approaching. Students must have a sponsor, paperwork, and approval from an assistant principal in order to register.

After months of having to meet virtually, clubs are now authorized to hold in-person meetings. Club sponsors should submit the number of students attending and the desired location to either assistant principal Fern Bamfo-Addo or Tony Escoto to receive approval, and guarantee that their plan is following the necessary rules to minimize COVID risk.

“In order to meet in person, all attendees should wear masks appropriately at all times, maintain 6 feet distance, and use hand sanitizer upon entering and leaving the room,” Bamfo-Addo said via email. “However, the LHS administration reserves the right to deny requests for in-person club meetings based on the logistics associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.”

A chance to physically see and interact with peers could potentially serve as a much-needed comfort during these times, explains Sophomore Athena Tseng, President of Diversify Our Narrative LHS.

“At the moment we are doing virtual meetings because of the amount of members online this year,” Tseng said. “However, I think in-person meetings would be good and would help everyone to get to know each other as long as people enforce social distancing and masks. It could help you have a better relationship with the people in your clubs.”

Despite this opportunity, many clubs, such as the Music Performance Club founded and led by senior Juliy Kim, are opting to remain virtual due to their own personal safety concerns

“We are currently holding our meetings virtually, every Friday from 4:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.,” Kim said. “The goal of this club is to spread the joy of music with our community through our virtual concert and to offer opportunities for musicians to perform and get feedback through our mock auditions. Although I am not comfortable enough to hold meetings in person, as many of the officers are, we could partially move the meetings to in person at some point.”
