The girls basketball team soared in the Dallas Mavs Fall Classic tournament this weekend placing sixth overall. The team is suffering from many injuries, but their spirits are still high.

It’s on to the third round in the UIL 5A state playoffs for the girls’ basketball team as they jumped out to a big lead over Carrollton Newman Smith High School on Saturday and pulled away for the 67-23 win.

“We want to try to be the best we can and every single day I strive to get better [as a coach],” head coach Ross Reedy said. “I think our biggest strength, to be honest, was the fact that we show up everyday.”

Having to endure a postponement of several days due to the winter weather that put most of Texas in a deep freeze, Reedy says his team is prepared to go with the flow.

“A lot of things happened, but that’s just kind of how it was,” Reedy said. “We want our kids to be problem solving instead of coaches, because players problem solving on the court makes the process more efficient.”

Through all she and her team have been through, junior Jazzy Owens-Barnett has her sights set high as she and her team shoot their way to the top.

“We definitely have a different mindset right now,” Owens-Barnett said via text. “We respect all the teams around us, but we have our eye on the prize, one game at a time.”
