ISM application window closes Friday

The deadline for Independent Study Membership (ISM) applications has been extended to Friday, providing students extra time to prepare.

“The ISM Program is a challenging course designed for academically gifted and high achieving junior and senior students,” teacher Kelli Secord said. “It covers a variety of topics such as resume writing, interviewing skills, business and social etiquette, intense research, topic-related product development, public speaking and presentations, hands-on experiences in real work environments, participation in district events, portfolio development, and more.”

In addition to a variety of interpersonal skills, the class offers research opportunities for an unlimited amount of fields. The possibilities are, quite literally, limitless. This flexibility means that it is a possibility for any student who is willing to dedicate their time and energy to their work.

“The ISM class is an excellent opportunity to learn more about your interests and the professional world,” senior Tom Punnen said. “Do not worry if you are still undecided about your future career path. Use the ISM program as an opportunity to explore your interests and discover what motivates you. Beyond preparing you for a future career, the program helps build your connections and hone important skills such as time management and professionalism.”

While there is some room to explore, applying in order to pursue a true interest is important, according to junior Gauri Pala.

“Some advice I would give to students who are interested in ISM is that it’s important to genuinely have a passion for learning about your topic of choice since you’re studying it for the entire year,” Pala said. “If you simply just join ISM because it ‘looks good on college applications,’ then it won’t be as valuable for you and won’t really benefit you overall.”

For senior Sarah Ahmed, who is currently studying Pediatric Hematology Oncology for her second year in a row, this class lays down a sound base for future endeavors.

“I would recommend others to apply to ISM as many of us, as high schoolers, don’t get opportunities to go after their passions,” Ahmed said. “ISM is a program that understands that some teenagers are almost certain on their future job, and gives them the opportunity to go after it. Moreover, we have the opportunity to make contacts that could greatly help in the future.”
