Wingspan: Who or what inspired you to join band?

Levi: “I mean my parents kind of forced me, but obviously my brother definitely inspired me because he grew a lot as a person, especially in between his sophomore and junior year in band, and that level of growth and maturity with something that, you know, to me as, I don’t know, how old was I? Like 11, was unforeseen back then so I thought it was really cool. He was also really popular and loved life, so that was something I wanted to do.”

Wingspan: What was the first instrument you ever played?

Levi: “I don’t remember. I’m pretty sure that it was drum set. I did drum set as a kid because I always thought that was kind of interesting, and that’s also why my dad sort of pushed me into doing percussion in middle school. So yeah I’m pretty sure I did do drum set as a kid and that would be the first one I played.”

Wingspan: What’s your favorite part about percussion?

Levi: “My favorite part about percussion? I personally really enjoy the variety of it. A lot of people sort of see it as an entry barrier, but I enjoy it just because nothing gets really stale, so it’s like a new thing everyday. Like, if you were to play a trumpet for 7 years, I feel like eventually that would start to get a little boring, unless you really care for the art itself. But for percussion it doesn’t really happen that way and you can really just key into what is most specific for you better than any other instrument can.”
