Following a close loss the previous week, the Redhawks brought home a championship in the annual Mavs Fall Classic. The game came down to a final basket made by junior, Journee Chambers.

Coming off a season-opening loss to South Grand Prairie, the girls’ basketball team bounced back in a big way, winning four straight games and the championship of the Mavs Fall Classic Blue Bracket with Saturday’s 43-41 win over district rival Memorial

“It was great,” head coach Ross Reedy said. “I don’t get fixated on the wins as much. I hope we are learning lessons. Usually we play these tournaments at the beginning of the year and get absolutely throttled, so of course to come and get some wins and beat a team that we will see in 17 days was great.”

Playing four games in three days, the team didn’t have much time to prepare for each game.

“We were forced to problem solve and think,” Reedy said. “I love short scouts especially at the beginning of the year because you are forced to think and you can’t necessarily play everyone the same way so I was encouraged to see the progress the kids are making on the court and that they are thinking.”

The Redhawks ended the tournament with a buzzer beater by junior Journee Chambers to win the championship.

“I was glad that I could win the game for my team,” Chambers said. “It was a great note to end on and it felt great.”

Along with playing a huge role in the team’s success, senior Jazzy Owens-Barnett was awarded the Mavs Fall Classic MVP award.

“It felt really good,” Owens-Barnett said. “I was really just proud of my teammates and everything that we had accomplished.”
