In this week’s edition of Artistic Expression, Wingspan sits down with floral designer Navya Nagarajan as she talks about her floral design journey.

Navya Nagarajan

Name: Navya Nagarajan

Grade: 10

Years in floral design: 1 year

Future job: Art or Veterinary Science

Wingspan: What do you do in floral design?

Nagarajan: “We basically learn about different flowers. Everyday my teacher makes us learn about two flowers maximum, and we’re going to be using that knowledge later on in Floral Arrangement. We also learn about the history of floral design and upcoming events in Liberty and the history of those and we kind of help make decorations for them.”

Wingspan: What is your favorite aspect of floral design?

Nagarajan: “Floral design is pretty self paced and chill so once you’re done with your work my teacher allows you to do whatever you want, so that’s probably my favorite.”

Wingspan: What is the most difficult aspect of floral design?

Nagarajan: “Memorizing all the flowers because they are kind of hard to remember plus my teacher kind of just gives an overview of them.”

Wingspan: What is your favorite project in floral design?

Nagarajan: “Probably making the mums or garters because that was kind of challenging and I like challenging things.”

Wingspan: What was your experience making your mum or garter?

Nagarajan: “It was kind of hard because some of the instructions weren’t what I was used to but my teacher gave us a visual representation and she gave us a presentation about mums and garter so we had to make it based on that.”

Wingspan: How has floral design taught you real life skills?

Nagarajan: “Yes, definitely it taught us professional communications which is important wherever you go. We usually have group work and you have to collaborate with each other to help each other and she grades you on emails, you have to send an email to your parents or teacher and she grades you on how well you communicate with them.”

Wingspan: Is floral design something you will pursue in the future?

Nagarajan: “Yes definitely. It is for sure something I am considering as a future career.”
