Zoe Langford

Managing editor Rin Ryu sits down with art student Zoe Langford as she discusses her life taking art classes.

Zoe Langford

Name: Zoe Langford

Grade: 11th

Future College: University of Texas at Austin

Future job: optometrist

Years of experience: 10

Favorite artist: Leonardo da Vinci

Wingspan: What made you choose art?

Langford: “Honestly, I needed a GPA boost. Since I’ve done art for a long time, I knew that I’d enjoy the class. Also since I already spend time drawing for fun, I thought that it wouldn’t hurt to do it for school. ”

Wingspan: What do you like about art?

Langford: “I like that there are no rules for art. Although it’s important to learn the fundamentals like shading, there is no correct way to do art. Since I’m always in classes where there is a specific way to do things like math, the freedom of art class is really refreshing.”

Wingspan: How does art impact your daily life?

Langford: “It gives me an outlet to express my emotions and acts as an outlet for stress. Also, it’s nice to rely on the class to destress during a stressful school day.”

Wingspan: Are you considering continuing art beyond?

Langford: “Nope, it’ll still be a hobby, but I have no interest in pursuing fine arts as a full-time job.”

Wingspan: What are your personal goals for this year?

Lanford: “Simply put, I just want to get better at art.”

Wingspan: What is your favorite medium to use for art?

Langford: “My favorite mediums to use are graphite for realistic pieces and charcoal for drawing.”

Wingspan: How do you balance art, school, and any other extracurriculars?

Langford: “In all honesty, I don’t do a great job of balancing art and school. While I use a calendar and apps that schedule my day, I still procrastinate art projects a lot.”

Wingspan: What’s your favorite art project you’ve done?

Langford: “I’ve really enjoyed drawing self-portraits.”

Wingspan: What is your advice to anybody thinking about joining art?

Langford: “I would say to make sure you draw what you enjoy, but don’t be afraid to go outside your comfort zone. Also don’t procrastinate or rush on your pieces, so that you can create the best artwork possible.”
