Wingspan’s featured athlete for 1/12 is varsity soccer player Cate Butcher.

Wingspan: How did you get started playing soccer?

Butcher: “My whole family played soccer so I was just born into it and started playing when I was like 7.”

Wingspan: What do you think your role on the team is? 

Butcher: “I play left wing so I guess to get out wide so I can get the ball up the field and also to encourage my teammates off the field.”

Wingspan: What is the hardest part about soccer?

Butcher: “Learning how your teammates play because in order to be successful on the field you really have to work as a team.”

Wingspan: Do you plan to continue soccer after high school? 

Butcher: “No, not at all because I’m just not that serious about it anymore.”

Wingspan: How do you manage having school and a job while playing soccer?

Butcher: “I just scheduled around the days I have soccer and my job is pretty lenient.”

Wingspan: What are your goals for this coming season?   

Butcher: “To make it to playoffs since we haven’t in a while.”

Wingspan: Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions? 

Butcher: “No, none that I can think of right now at least.”

Wingspan: Who has been your biggest motivation? 

Butcher: “Probably our seniors this year because I’ve played school soccer with them since my freshman year and I want them to be able to go to the playoffs for their last year.”

Wingspan: How do you feel about soccer season being in the winter? 

Butcher: “I hate it because it’s too cold and would rather it be in the fall.”
