As fall rolls towards winter and the weather eventually begins to change, drivers may need to be aware of a new road policy that may affect Redhawks across campus.
A bill effective Sept. 1 declares that varying speed limits can be applied to Texas roadways depending on the area’s conditions.
The policy, House Bill 1885, was authored by State Representative Terry Canales after a massive chain of weather-related car accidents in early February of 2021.
The new law gets the approval of School Resource Officer Glen Hubbard.
“I think it’s a good policy, road safety and traffic is really important,” Hubbard said. I think limiting some speeds during road construction is always taking place, but lowering it would be beneficial just for safety reasons. There’s people workin’ and there’s a lot of barricades up and things like that especially at night people won’t see it, and the same goes with weather especially in the wintertime when the weather gets kinda icy and being able to lower those speed limits I think will help out quite a bit as far as accidents and things”
However some students, such as senior Suchir Mishra, have mixed feelings on the policy’s necessity.
“I think it will definitely make roads safer because if you don’t put these types of speed limits people like to drive fast and that might lead to more risk in these areas,” Mishra said. “I would say to some extent… I don’t know if it’s completely necessary but I think there’s some merit to it.”
