The district’s window opened Wednesday for juniors and seniors in band, orchestra, theater, choir, color guard, dance, and athletics to opt-out of having their fine arts or athletics credit as part of their GPA.
“Being in a sport or activity can actually lower your GPA, even if you make a hundred,” counselor Leanne Rainey said. “So this is to reward you for participating for 3 and four years but not bringing your GPA down.”
The GPA opt-out is only open until Oct. 1 and is only available to students who have taken two years of a fine art or sport and have a weighted GPA of 5.0.
Students interested in the GPA opt-out must fill out a GPA-opt out form, after which they will receive an email.
“Band is an on-level class like all the other fine arts for the most part but it’ll bring down your GPA if you have above a 5.0 weighted,” junior Krishna Perneti said. “Not having it there will really help me bring up my academics.”
