For many, the COVID-19 pandemic meant all of their hobbies were put on hold as public spaces shut down. But for sibling duo Brandon and Savannah Hudson, the pandemic gave them time to gather followers and establish a name for themselves – BETWEEN FRIENDS.
The pair were interested in music from a young age, with Brandon learning how to play guitar and Savannah singing along, they eventually debuted their skills on the eighth season of America’s Got Talent in 2013. In 2015, they formed a band The Heirs with a few other musicians but in 2017 when the group disbanded, they officially introduced themselves as BETWEEN FRIENDS and their following really took off in 2020.
Their style of music is funky, synth-filled, and genre-defying or as Brandon and Savannah have phrased it, “We’re part of the Gen-Z crew of ADD, and so much consumption of content all day long…We consume so much that putting ourselves in any sort of corner feels weird.” Their music is almost psychedelic when you listen to it – the musical styles hop from techno to synth to pop. Just as the Hudsons said, in an age filled with overconsumption of content, their music definitely gives overstimulated brains lots to listen to.
They have released three albums since their initial debut – i like when you shine!, CUTiE, and I Love My Girl, She’s My Boy. If you listen to their album in order, you can really hear the progression of their music style and how they gain confidence in their genre-spanning structure over time. i like when you shine! is full of mini-songs (most are about 1:30 minutes long) and super fun to listen to. I consider a little sample box of BETWEEN FRIENDS. CUTiE and Love My Girl, She’s My Boy are bolder and feature longer songs, which really give listeners time to appreciate Brandon’s instrumental skills and Savannah’s powerful vocals, as well as how seamlessly they segue between genres on a track.
