He hasn’t released an album yet, but that definitely hasn’t put a damper on his success. sombr (AKA Shane Boose) has been creating music since high school; in 2021 at LaGuardia High School he dropped his first single. He then dropped out of school as a junior in 2022 and moved from New York to Los Angeles.
He has since released an EP, In Another Life, which saw big success for a release from a small artist. Two of his songs have been on the Billboard Hot 100, with “back to friends” reaching 56 and “undressed” peaking at 84.
sombr’s musical style is much slower and more melancholy than the stuff I typically listen to, but I find that that in and of itself makes it more appealing. Just as his name would suggest, sombr’s work is chill, reflective, and well… a little bit somber. Most of his work looks back on past relationships and what could’ve been. The instrumentation isn’t overwhelming and incorporates chill synth, layered vocals, piano, and some basic percussion.
Some of his songs, however, are a little more upbeat. If you like songs with just a little more pep to them, I recommend “makes me want you” and “do i ever cross your mind”. sombr’s work is poetic and sad, but in the best possible way. I honestly find that his work makes really great background for doing homework or when you just need to wind down.
My Top Ten:
- “undressed”
- “makes me want you”
- “i don’t know you anymore”
- “ivy”
- “savior”
- “perfume”
- “nothing left to say”
- “weak”
- “my house is warm”
- “you’re so pretty”
