Daniel Seavey first shared his musical talents with the world in 2015, where at 15 years old he finished in the Top 9 on American Idol (Season 14). But his interest in music began over a decade before his television performance; at four years old he stole his sister’s Barbie toy piano and plinked out “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” by ear.
After his run on American Idol, he joined the pop band Why Don’t We in 2016 and launched his solo career after the band went on hiatus in 2022. Aside from releasing singles, he also toured with Benson Boone in 2024. On March 7 of this year, Seavey released his debut album Second Wind.
Seavey is a very talented artist and although he has released music before, the fact that this is his first solo album means listeners really have the chance to hear his musical abilities and learn more about his own unique style.
Second Wind, as the ocean-backed album cover suggests, does have a distinctly “beach-y” vibe to it. Synth beats and alternative rock-style drums paired with pop-coded guitar work to achieve a hint of that iconic California sound, paired with some gentler acoustic-and-piano moments as well. This range of styles throughout the album, from mainstream pop to alternative Cali rock to subtle indie, showcases Seavey’s talent across genres and introduces his unique style to the music world.
Compared to his earlier releases, which lean more towards pop-rock (a structure similar to his boy band days), this album is Seavey’s statement of who he is and can be as a musical artist. Seavey’s voice, which can be paired with everything from gentle piano ballads to electric guitar chords, is uniquely expressive and really helps the listeners experience his emotions through simply listening to a three-minute song. This skill, which many artists have but few present in a way as effectively as Seavey, is what makes his work so impressive.
