Although they couldn’t get past Lone Star (19-14, 8-6 District 12-5A) in 2024, the volleyball team (32-4, 13-1 District 11-5A) came out on top against the Rangers in the first round of playoffs Thursday night at Frisco High School.
The seventh-in-state Redhawks won all three sets (25-22, 31-29, 25-10) and outscored the Rangers 81-61 to advance to the second round of playoffs as bi-district champions. They had some statistical advantages, too: Lone Star had seven blocks compared to the Redhawk’s five, but the team led in both kills per set (17.7 vs 10.3) and hitting percentage (.345 compared to .132).
“We all wanted this after our loss to them last year, we all prepared for this the best we could, and we were able to come out the winner,” senior outside hitter Maddie LaGrone said. “It was a super exciting win for us.”
Assistant coach Ashley Pennington also cited the team’s loss to the Rangers last year as motivation.
“They might not be a big name in their district, but after last year I think the girls were really motivated to beat them,” Pennington said.
