Although the game was in South Garland, a group of fans made it to see the team’s first win 31-13 over South Garland.

After three straight losses to open the season, the football team got back on the winning track Thursday, going on the road and beating South Garland 31-13.

“Well now that we have the taste of the win, we really don’t want to lose another football game,”  junior Dimitri Jones said. “We want to keep the winning spirit alive.”

Jones scored on an 83-yard touchdown run with :06 left in the first quarter that saw him break tackles and outrace several defenders.

“It made me feel good like to score the first touchdown and get like the team sparked and hyped to win the game, it felt really good, just relief that we aren’t like 0-4,” Jones said. “I don’t know how to explain it, I really wanted to score because it as 0-0 and I didn’t want to lose another football game, so I mean I just ran the ball.”

Senior Josh Wright also had a big play with an 83-yard pass from quarterback Grant Buss to score in the second quarter.

“It was a pretty big boost for us because after the last game versus Prosper, we put up zero points,” Wright said. “The fact that we were putting up points in a hurry like that, I think it really got us to build our confidence and really energize the whole team.”

The team has a bye next week which gives it plenty of time to prepare for District 13-5A to resume against Centennial on Sept. 23.

“[The team] should be motivated and have a good week of work and you know one thing about the off week is a chance to kinda heal up physically,” offensive coordinator Matt Swinnea said “We also work on some fundamentals and go back to the basics. Really as far as momentum goes, this is exactly what we needed.”

Now with its first win in the record books, the team has its sights set on its first district game.

“It’s one game at a time, the next opponent is the school down the street and so you know we will work out specifically based on what they do,” Swinnea said. “You know every week we’ll have a different game plan but ultimately it’ll be about us and doing what we do well.”
