Freshman Julia Johnson plays violin as well as trumpet. She started playing violin at the age of four and trumpet in 6th grade.

Wingspan: When did you start playing an instrument? What instruments do you play?

Johnson: “I started playing violin when I was almost four and trumpet in sixth grade.”

Wingspan: What is it like being in both band and orchestra?

Johnson: “It really helps with time management, just making sure I have time to practice. I get up early to practice, especially during marching season.”

Along with playing the violin, Johnson also plays the trumpet.

Wingspan: How are the dynamics of band and orchestra different from each other?

Johnson: “You spend a lot of time in band so you get to know a lot more people, but in orchestra I feel as if it’s more of a family as a full orchestra because I’ve made a lot moe friends.”

Wingspan: What have you learned about yourself through being in two different time consuming electives?

Johnson: “I’ve learned a lot about time management and that procrastination is not key.”

Wingspan: How has music affected your life?

Johnson: “It’s definitely helped with school, like understanding things, and definitely the social skills of it because I’ve spent a lot of time with people in orchestra and band.”

Wingspan: What is it like having your mom as a music teacher?

Johnson: “I really enjoy having my mom as a music teacher because she can help me when I’m practicing at home and need something clarified. Also her and my dad are two of the main reasons I want to be a teacher because I can see how much they enjoy teaching.”

Wingspan: What is your favorite piece you’ve played?

Johnson: “I think my favorite piece was Warrior Legacy when I was in the seventh grade, I loved it, there were a lot of changes dynamically and I love the style of the music.It was also the first piece I played in a full orchestra.”
