11. E•MO•TION – Carly Rae Jepsen
Before you full-out roast me in the comments below, let me explain. Sure, this is pure, shameless bubblegum pop. But it’s pure, shameless bubblegum pop done extremely well. Jepsen has become a master in the craft of catchy beats, memorable lyrics, and crisp rhythms and she thoroughly exhibits her skills along these sweet synth tracks. Lead track “Run Away With Me” sounds like a revamped version of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” while boy-crazy songs “When I Needed You” and “Your Type” sound almost like young Madonna. And don’t be afraid to revisit designated radio trash “I Really Like You” which sounds much more respectable and calculated in context of the album. Listen to the record and, then, see if you can look me in the eyes and roast me without feeling a connection with the love-drunk Jepsen. Her spelling of the album title is no mistake; she will make you feel every syllable. E•MO•TION is an ’80s-inspired sugar rush sprinkled with glitter and littered with hormones.
