Currently In: Varsity Mixed Choir and Plays Piano

Years in Choir: 3-5th grade and then since 8th grade

Future College: Columbia or University of Texas at Austin

Wingspan: How long have you been singing?

Majumdar: “I’ve been singing my entire life. I started being more serious about it by doing Indian Classical singing lessons throughout elementary school and also by singing in the school choir. Then, since 8th grade I’ve been in the school choir.”

Wingspan: Are there any other fine arts you do?

Majumdar: “I play the piano and I’ve been doing that for 12 years.”

Wingspan: What would you say inspired you to be interested in music?

Majumdar: “Almost everybody in my family does some sort of fine art, like my dad sings, my grandpa used to sing, one of my uncles is a famous singer in India, my other uncle is a guitarist. So a lot of people in my family do fine arts, so that just kind of baited me to do it.”

Wingspan: How has playing music changed your outlook on life and how does it impact you as a person?

Majumdar: “Music is something that impacts me greatly. It’s something that has impacted me most throughout my life because it’s something that is so important to me and so close to my heart. I don’t know what I would do without music. I think it helped me to discover different varieties of music and it helped me to become a more artistic person in general. I’m able to express that in more subjects that I do.”

Wingspan: Would music ever be something that you would consider as a career?

Majumdar: “I really think I do consider music to be something that I could do as a career. But I mean, my parents have kind of drilled into my head that music isn’t really a sustainable career, and it’s very difficult to make ends meet as a rising singer. I know corporate law is more of a steady job that I can achieve and have a steady flow of income when I grow up. However, I really want to sing and I’m going to try minoring in vocal performance to try and make a job out of that as well.”

Wingspan: In your own time, what do you do to practice piano or practice singing?

Majumdar: “I practice the piano whenever I have time apart from doing my studies and I sing at home, I sing in the choir, I sing recreationally – so just for fun. I also take private lessons for both singing and piano.”

Wingspan: How does your family play a part in the musical aspect of your life?

Majumdar: “My dad sings a lot, so he is constantly encouraging me to sing. He gives me suggestions of songs to sing. I also perform songs at my community’s events.”

Wingspan: What opportunities have you gotten from singing or from piano?

Majumdar: “So, in piano I have participated in many Plano Music Festival competitions such as the Sonatina Competition. For singing I’ve participated in the All-Region Choir auditions and have had solo performances for choir. In my Indian community, I sing Hindi songs at every event we have.”

Wingspan: Is there a variety of styles you sing in?

Majumdar: “As a choral performer, I mostly do classical music. For solos I sing pop music or R&B songs, and at community events I usually sing Hindi songs that show off my vocal range.”

Wingspan: After high school, how do you plan to continue being musical while also balancing your other interests?

Majumdar: “I want to join my college’s choir; I also want to maybe teach private lessons to kids for piano and vocal lessons. I want to minor in vocal performance.”
